Counseling and Coaching: What’s the Difference?
I offer both counseling (therapy) and coaching as distinct services. While they may look similar, they serve different purposes. This overview is here to help you decide which type of support is the best fit for you.
Counseling (Therapy)
Counseling is a clinical mental health service I provide in my role as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Arizona and Washington state.
Counseling may be a good fit if you are experiencing emotional distress, mental health symptoms, or patterns that feel hard to change on your own. Together, we focus on emotional well-being, insight, and healing.
Counseling includes:
- Licensed, ethical mental health care
- Evidence-based treatment
- Possible assessment and diagnosis
- Support for anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationship concerns
- Attention to both past and present experiences
Counseling is appropriate when mental health treatment and clinical support are needed.
Coaching
Coaching is a non-clinical service focused on growth, clarity, and forward movement. When I provide coaching, I am not acting as a therapist.
Coaching may be a good fit if you are generally emotionally well and looking for structure, accountability, or support in reaching personal or professional goals.
Coaching includes:
- Goal setting and action planning
- Accountability and motivation
- Future-focused conversations
- Practical strategies for change
- No diagnosis or mental health treatment
Coaching is not therapy and is not covered by insurance.
Choosing the Right Fit
- Counseling is best when emotional support, healing, or mental health treatment is needed.
- Coaching is best when your focus is growth, direction, and intentional change.
To align with ethical and licensing standards, counseling and coaching are offered as separate services, and clients engage in one or the other—not both at the same time. If concerns arise that fall outside the scope of coaching, a referral to therapy may be recommended.
